The 4th of July is a time for family, friends, and of course, food! What better way to celebrate America's birthday than with some classic dishes?

Each year, we post a blog with some fun Fourth of July facts to share at your cookout. Here are some new, interesting tidbits about the most popular foods on Independence Day and where they come from. Enjoy!

  • Hot dogs: Hot dogs are a staple of any summer barbecue, and they're especially popular on the 4th of July. Over 150 million hot dogs will be consumed today in the U.S. 
  • Hamburgers: Hamburgers are a classic American dish that's perfect for the 4th of July. In fact burgers are the most popular food item on the fourth, with 85% of survey respondents saying burgers are their number one preference to eat while celebrating on the 4th.
  • BBQ chicken: BBQ chicken is also a super popular choice for grilling. In fact, 750 million pounds of chicken will be purchased in the lead-up to the holiday. The vast majority of that chicken comes from just a few states; Georgia, Arkansas, North Carolina, Alabama, Mississippi, or Texas.
  • Potato salad: Potato salad is a classic American side dish that's perfect for the 4th of July. Make it with your favorite ingredients, like potatoes, eggs, mayonnaise, mustard, and celery. Potato salad is a popular food because it is versatile and can be made with a variety of different ingredients. It is also a good source of carbohydrates, making it a filling option for a barbecue.
  • Beer: 5% of the annual national consumption of beers takes place on a single day - the 4th of July. That represents 68.3 million cases of beer. In. One. Day. 
  • Corn (41%), potatoes (41%), and other veggies (32%) are the most popular grilled side dishes.
