There’s nothing like summer in Northern Michigan, and the flavors that anchor family meals are local favorites like cherries, strawberries, and blueberries. While local produce picks up the pace in June, end-of-summer fruits and veggies well and truly shine, especially if you know where to find them.
From asparagus in June through late August, peaches and corn, the best summer veggies and tree fruits in the region, come from several local farms and orchards. Many of Traverse City’s farms have been in operation for decades, even centuries.
Strawberries kick things off in June, with cherries, raspberries, and blueberries usually ready by July. Peaches are an August delight, but cherries are typically still available until late summer.
Asparagus, radishes, and rhubarb are the first veggies to come in from the fields, usually by early June. Summer squash and zucchini are ready in July, and sweet corn, tomatoes, and peppers pop in August.
No matter when you visit, where you live, or when you shop, it’s always easy to find fruits and veggies once they're in season.
