Dryer Issues? Here’s Where to Start

Most modern clothes dryers are reliable, energy-efficient, and generally easy to use. But not always. Even dryers from top-of-the-line brands have their occasional hiccups, and some of the most common dryer issues fall into one of three buckets: the dryer won’t turn on, the dryer won’t heat, or the dryer won’t spin.

Obviously, those are kind of big problems. Luckily, Max’s has a few dryer troubleshooting tips to get things working again quickly.

Fixing Three Common Issues with Dryers

Whenever you encounter an issue with any appliance, start by checking whether it's still under warranty and looking for troubleshooting tips from Max’s or online. If we can help you fix it over the phone quickly, we will, usually by walking through these DIY fixes.

Why Won’t My Dryer Turn On?

In most cases, if your dryer won’t turn on, it’s because of a power issue. Check that the circuit breaker isn’t tripped, the start switch is on, and there's no loose plug. It seems obvious, but we’ve saved many homeowners a lot of money by asking them to ensure their appliances are plugged in!

There are two more things to check if your dryer won’t turn on.

  • First, check the door switch. If the door switch isn’t pressed, the dryer won’t start. With the door open, press the switch yourself and listen for a click.
  • Next, check the vent. An overly clogged dryer vent will eventually cause the thermal fuse to blow. The fuse will blow to prevent dangerous overheating.

Why Won’t My Dryer Heat Up?

If your dryer starts but doesn’t generate heat, you’re likely dealing with an airflow or heating element problem.

  • Remove excess lint from the vent hose, filter, or exhaust pipe. This restricts airflow, causing the dryer to overheat and blow the thermal fuse.
  • Inspect the heating element, which, over time, can break and stop producing heat. The heating element is typically located in the heater housing at the rear of the dryer cabinet. You’ll need to unplug your dryer and move it away from the wall to get a good look.
  • Gas supply issues, for gas dryers, can prevent heating. A faulty igniter can also be the cause.

You’ll likely need replacement parts or professional assistance to fix these issues.

Why Won’t My Dryer Spin?

If your dryer turns on but won’t spin, you’re almost certainly looking at a dryer belt issue. The dryer belt turns the dryer drum, and if it’s broken, you’ll hear the motor hum and feel the heat, but the drum itself won’t turn. Replacing a dryer belt is relatively easy if you have some DIY experience and can safely move the dryer away from the wall to access the belt.

Other possible causes include worn-out drum rollers, a failed idler pulley, or a faulty motor. It’s usually a good idea to check the door switch, too.

Remember, the best way to prevent dryer issues is to keep the lint trap and exhaust pipe clean, avoid overloading your dryer, and follow the instructions included in your owner’s manual.
