The History of Maytag

Washing machines started it all - literally. Originally known as the Maytag Washing Machine Company, the brand was born in Newton, Iowa, in 1893. Frederick Maytag, a businessman with a knack for machinery, grew the brand until his son, Elmber, took over in 1936. The company survived the Great Depression and joined in WWII production by manufacturing specialty components.

The Post-War Boom

The company returned to its washing machine roots in 1946 and quickly introduced the first automatic washers in 1968. At the same time, it expanded a line of ranges and refrigerators, capitalizing on an explosion in home appliances sales throughout the 1950s. Maytag backed out of the oven and refrigerator market by 1960, but expanded through various acquisitions, including Turbo Chef and the Amana Corporation.

After outsourcing the production of some of its products to offset costs, the company faced increased consumer scrutiny over quality and reliability. After a slew of subpart products, Whirlpool acquired the brand for $1.7 billion.

Who Owns Maytag Appliances Today?

Whirlpool owns Maytag, which uses the brand name on Whirlpool-designed product lines. The company operates several manufacturing facilities across the country and owns KitchenAid, Amana, JennAir and other appliance brands.

Where are Maytag Appliances Made?

All Maytag appliances are made at Whirlpool-owned factories, mostly in Clyde and Marion, Ohio. Most of its refrigerators are made in Amana, Iowa, while its dishwashers are made in Findlay, Ohio. Maytag’s commercial washing machines are assembled in Fall River, Massachusetts.
