What Appliances Are Made in the USA?

New tariffs have put a renewed focus - and incentive - on finding American-made appliances. Many consumers are relieved to learn that many of the largest appliance manufacturers operate production facilities in the US. While not every GE, Frigidaire, or Whirlpool is American-made, specific product lines are.

Find out what laundry and kitchen appliances are made in the USA, and which brands are investing in domestic production.

The Biggest US Appliance Manufacturers in the US

Today, most manufacturers have global footprints, sourcing raw materials, parts, and finished products from overseas and building certain product lines domestically. Combined with the increased consolidation of recognizable consumer brands, determining which manufacturers are legitimately “American Made” isn’t easy.

Whirlpool Corporation

Based in Benton Harbor, Michigan, Whirlpool owns several brands, including:

  • Maytag
  • KitchenAid
  • JennAir
  • Amana
  • Roper

Most Whirlpool appliances, and those of its subsidiaries, are made in the US. They operate production facilities in Ohio, Tennessee, and Iowa.

GE Appliances

GE Appliances is owned by Haier Group, with its US operations based in Louisville, Kentucky. Haier Group operates several appliance brands, including GE, GE Profile, Monogram, and Hotpoint. Haier Group is a Chinese company that bought GE’s appliance business in 2016 as the American conglomerate shed many of its diverse operations. To its credit, GE still makes most of its appliances in the US, including “Appliance Park” in Louisville.

LG

South Korean-owned LG Electronics is heavily invested in US appliance manufacturing, opening a large washer and dryer facility in Clarksville, Tennessee, in 2019. The brand is known for its technical innovation and is heavily invested in US-based energy storage operations.

Knowing which US appliance brands have substantial manufacturing facilities helps narrow down your options, but it’s important to note that not all appliances from these brands are US-made. Appliance lines, especially low-end or budget offerings, are sometimes made overseas and branded upon import. It’s very difficult to find any appliance that was produced entirely in the US; most are assembled in the US, and many imported parts are currently or will be subject to substantially higher tariffs in the years to come.

What Refrigerators are Made in the USA?

Most Whirlpool, Maytag, and KitchenAid refrigerators are made in Amana, Iowa. Some products are made in Mexico, but roughly 80% of Whirlpool and subsidiary brands are US-made. Sub-Zero, Thermador, and Viking refrigerators are all American-made.

What Dishwashers are Made in the USA?

Almost all Whirlpool, Maytag, Amana, and KitchenAid dishwashers are made in the US, with the bulk of production handled in Findlay, Ohio. Only a few lines of dishwashers from GE and Frigidaire are made in the US; we can let you know if the model you’re interested in was made in the US.

What Washers and Dryers Are Made in the USA?

Whirlpool, Maytag, and Amana are all almost exclusively made in the US. Most production is centered in three cities in Ohio (Clyde, Marion, and Greenville), though some are assembled at other facilities. GE, Speed Queen, and some LG washers and dryers are also made in the US.

Speed Queen is widely considered the most thoroughly American-made laundry appliance manufacturer, as well as a leader in quality.

How Tariffs Affect Home Appliance Prices

Tariffs on imported goods typically cause noticeable increases in consumer prices. Tariffs increase the cost of importing finished appliances, but also add to the cost of importing raw materials like aluminum and steel, and parts. Tariff policies in 2017-18 caused washer machine prices to rise 12% - including those made in the US. These prices are often passed through the value chain, with manufacturers passing on higher costs to retailers, who must then increase consumer prices.

Fortunately, there are significant rebates and promotions throughout the year to help households offset these higher appliance costs - here are some of the best times to buy
